Visva Bharati University Ph.D Admission 2023
Candidates who have already applied in accordance with the earlier notification against the prospectus 2023-24 need NOT apply again. However, they will be given an opportunity to update their academic credentials.
1. All new applicants have to submit the form and make the necessary payments. Candidates have to ensure that information provided are correct and error free. No additional window will be opened for correction.
2. Once the payment is done for new applicants, the form is considered submitted and no correction would be allowed further.
3. Old applicants who have already registered may open their application and make necessary updates in the academic section. No correction is allowed in the Profile section.
4. The old applicants, after making necessary updates (if any), have to submit the application through payment page. Since they have already paid earlier, there is no need to pay for the corrected application form. But they need to submit the form again visiting payment page.
5. For those old applicants who do not make any correction/update in the application, their applications will be automatically submitted after the last date of submission.
6. Old applicants willing to cancel their application form must click on the ‘WITHDRAW APPLICATION” button in their Samarth account before the last date of application. For this, they may have to submit the application first and click the ‘WITHDRAW APPLICATION” and then send an intimation of cancellation over email [email protected] .
Cancellation request without executing “WITHDRAW APPLICATION” button will not be entertained.
7. No refund will be made for application withdrawn after the last date of application.
The Ph.D. Prospectus-2023 can be downloaded from the Visva-Bharati admission portal (www.vbadmission.in). It is to be noted that the entire process of Ph.D. admission 2023-24 will be guided by the Ph.D. Prospectus-2023 and notifications published time to time by the University in the admission portal. Candidates must read very carefully the guidelines available in the Ph.D. Prospectus 2023 before submission of online application through Samarth. Application submitted without requisite eligibility will be treated as cancelled.
Fees for application are to be paid through online only. Application fee is not refundable.

1. The following are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. programme:-
(1) Candidates who have completed:-
i.) A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed
Or
Equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled category as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled category as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
(2) Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled category as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
(3) Category Certificates (OBC Non-Creamy layer/SC/ST/EWS/PWD), issued by competent authority. Validity period of OBC Certificate is three (03) years (If the OBC certificate is older than (03) three years, current year OBC Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) issued by S.D.O or Equivalent officials is mandatory, for EWS it is current year and PWD certificate validity as mentioned in the certificate. No request for further timing will be entertained.
2. Duration of the Ph.D. Programme:
(1) Ph.D. Programme shall be for a minimum duration of three (3) years, including course work, and a maximum duration of six (6) years from the date of admission to the Ph.D. programme.
(2) A maximum of an additional two (2) years can be given through a process of re-registration as per the Statute/Ordinance of the Higher Educational Institution concerned; provided, however, that the total period for completion of a Ph.D. programme should not exceed eight (8) years from the date of admission in the Ph.D. programme.
Provided further that, female Ph.D. scholars and Persons with Disabilities (having more than 40% disability) may be allowed an additional relaxation of two (2) years; however, the total period for completion of a Ph.D. programme in such cases should not exceed ten (10) years from the date of admission in the Ph.D. programme.
(3) Female Ph.D. Scholars may be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave for up to 240 days in the entire duration of the Ph.D. programme.
3. Procedure for Ph.D. admission:
(1) The admission shall be based on the criteria notified by the institution, keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory/regulatory bodies concerned, and taking into account the reservation policy of the Central Government from time to time.
(2) Admission to the Ph.D. programme shall be made using the following methods:
i. Visva-Bharati may admit students who qualify for fellowship/scholarship in UGC– NET/UGC – CSIR NET/ GATE/ CEED and similar National level tests based on an interview.
And/or
ii. Visva-Bharati may admit students through an Entrance Test conducted at the level of the individual. The Entrance Test syllabus shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.
iii. Students who have secured 50 % marks in the entrance test are eligible to be called for the interview.
iv. A relaxation of 5 % marks will be allowed in the entrance examination for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/differently-abled category as per the decision of the Commission (Government of India) from time to time.
v. Visva-Bharati may decide the number of eligible students to be called for an interview based on the number of Ph.D. seats available.
vi. Provided that for the selection of candidates based on the entrance test conducted by the Visva-Bharati, a weightage of 70 % for the entrance test and 30 % for the performance in the interview/viva- voce shall be given.
4. Date of Entrance Test/Interview:
The date of Entrance test/interview will be finalized by the concerned Department. Date, time and venue will be notified in the University Admission Portal.

6. Venue of Examination:
Respective Department / Centre of Each Bhavana / Vibhaga (Institute) or as otherwise notified.
6. Reservation of Seats:
Reservation of seats for OBC, SC, ST, EWS and Differently abled candidates (OBC Non creamy layer -27%, SC -15%, ST -7.5%, EWS -10%, PWD -5%) will be made as per the rules of the Government of India.
7. Declaration of list of eligible Candidates:
The Department/Centre of Bhavana/Vibhaga (Institute) will publish the list of eligible
candidates in the University website at least seven days before the date of examination/ interview.
8. Incomplete applications are liable to be summarily rejected. Rights of cancellation or admission lie with the Admission Committee of the Bhavanas / Vibhaga (Institute) concerned. The University reserves the right to restrict the number of eligible applicants to be called for admission test/interview.
9. Admission of International students in Ph.D. programme:
(1) Each supervisor can guide up to two international research scholars on a supernumerary basis over and above the permitted number of Ph.D. scholars as specified in clause 6.3. (An eligible Professor can guide up to 8, an associate professor can guide up to 6 and an assistant professor can guide up to 4 Ph.D. scholars, respectively, at any given time.)
(2) The selection procedure for Ph.D. admission of international students will be followed as per Indian students. It may be through online mode also.
10. Ph.D. through Part-time Mode-
(1) Ph.D. programmes through part-time mode will be permitted, provided all the conditions stipulated in these Regulations are fulfilled.
(2) Visva-Bharati shall obtain a “No Objection Certificate” through the candidate for a part-time Ph.D. programme from the appropriate authority in the organization where the candidate is employed, clearly stating that:
i. The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis.
ii. His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research.
iii. If required, he/she will be relieved from the duty to complete the course work.
11. Applicants are advised to visit our website for any update (inclusion/omission) in connection with the admission test/interview at regular intervals. Candidates who have already applied in accordance with the earlier notification against the prospectus 2023-24 need NOT apply again. However, they will be given an opportunity to upgrade their academic credentials (UGC- NET/UGC- CSIR NET or any fellowship or scholarship).
12. Students against whom disciplinary action has been taken for indiscipline/anti-institutional activities etc. shall not be eligible for admission to the university academic programme

The Online application allows the candidate to provide all information and also to upload scanned photograph (4 cm x 3 cm) and signature. Candidate can make the payment Online using any of the Online payment methods of Net Banking, Debit Card, Credit Card, Payment through mobiles (A nominal TDR charge would be applicable). Candidates would get INSTANT confirmation of their payments and submissions when they pay through online payment methods as listed. The application fee is non-refundable.
International students will be communicated over e-mail after filling up of form for completion of payment.
