Governorates of Kuwait: Kuwait is divided into six governorates, also known as muhafazat in Arabic. Each governorate is further subdivided into areas and districts.

Each governorate is headed by a Governor who is appointed by a ministerial decree for a period of 4 years, which can be renewed upon the proposal of the Prime Minister.

The history of the formation of these governorates began in 1962 with Emiri decree No. 6, which initially divided Kuwait into three governorates: Al Asimah Governorate, Ḩawallī Governorate, and Al Aḩmadi Governorate.

Later on, additional governorates were established:

Jahra Governorate in 1979
Farwaniya Governorate in 1988
Mubarak Al-Kabeer Governorate in 1999

This administrative division allows for more localized governance and services within the country.
