PhD programme in the Department of Genetics

Applications are invited for admission to the Ph.D. Programme in the Department of Genetics. Candidates willing to pursue research work leading subsequently to the Ph.D. (Sc.) degree in Genetics, University of Calcutta, should apply in plain paper in the format attached herewith (downloadable from University Website) to the Department of Genetics, University of Calcutta (by post/ by hand at office of Department of Genetics, University of Calcutta.

The eligible candidate will have to appear for an offline written MCQ examination, the details of which are appended below.

Successful candidates will be called for an interview where apart from answering fundamental questions, they are also expected to discuss their research interest/area based on a Statement of Purpose (SoP) not exceeding 1000 words that the candidates need to submit at the time of initial application. The final selection for joining the PhD program along with the allocation of supervisor will be made on the basis of this Interview.

The candidates seeking admission in the PhD programme must have obtained at least 55% of marks in aggregate in their M.Sc. examination from any UGC recognized university/at least 50% of marks in M.Phil/M.Tech.

Those candidates with valid DBT/ICMR/ICAR/UGC-CSIR: NET/SET/SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship/DST INSPIRE Fellowship or equivalent or who passed M.Phil/M.Tech or equivalent examination need not appear for the written test. Nevertheless, they are to submit a complete application including the SoP.

Self-attested copies of all testimonials {including M.Sc, M.Tech., M.Phil mark-sheets (as per applicable) and DBT/ICMR/ICAR/UGC-CSIR NET/SET/SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship/INSPIRE Fellowship or equivalent examination/fellowship (as applicable)} must be submitted by the candidate along with the application. The SC/ST/OBC certificates must also be produced, as relevant. Incomplete applications will be cancelled.

Department of Genetics presently has 3 vacancies for which reservation policies would follow as set by the Higher Education Department, Govt. of West Bengal vide Notification no. 07-Edn /IU-89/13 dated 2nd January, 2014 [according to West Bengal State Higher Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2013].

Important Dates: PhD programme in the Department of Genetics

1. Duration of submission of application: 29.09.2023 to 12.10.2023. Application along with all testimonials and SoP should be sent to Department of Genetics (Office), University of Calcutta, Taraknath Palit Siksha Prangan, 35, Ballygunge Circular Road, Kolkata – 700019 (by post/ by hand at office of Department of Genetics, University of Calcutta between 1:00 – 5:00 pm on all working days).

2. List of eligible candidates for written examination to be conveyed via email: 13.10.2023

3. Date of RET (written part) Examination (offline) (MCQ type: 50 questions: duration: 12 noon- 1pm): 06.11. 2023

4. Date of declaration of results of the written part of RET (to be conveyed via email: ) on: 07.11.2023

5. Date of offline RET interview for successful candidates in the RET written part and also for the candidates with valid DBT/ICMR/ICAR/UGC-CSIR: NET/SET/SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship/DST INSPIRE Fellowship or equivalent or who passed M.Phil/M.Tech or equivalent examination (see page 1): 08.11.2023 (12 noon onwards)

6. Names of successful candidates will be published in the University website and also the successful candidates emailed personally.

The syllabus for RET written examination will be fundamentally based on the current M.Sc. (Genetics) syllabus of the University of Calcutta (downloadable from university website). However, knowledge of Chemistry, Statistics and basics of computer applications would also be tested.

Mode of examination: PhD programme in the Department of Genetics

1. The offline RET written examination will be held at Department of Genetics, University of Calcutta. The RET written question paper will be an MCQ paper of 100 marks. There will be 50 questions, each carrying +2 for correct answer and -1 for incorrect answer; no marks will be provided if the question is not attempted. The duration of this exam would be 1 hour.

2. Candidates will fill up their particulars like name, address etc. before answering the MCQ questions and submit the answer sheet within the stipulated time of the examination.

3. The qualified candidates will be intimated through email. The time of interview of each candidate will be informed through email.
