Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is an autonomous academic national institution under Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India dedicated to research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Allied Sciences & Technology. The Institute has its main campus in Koramangala, Bangalore and CREST Campus at Hosakote, Bangalore.
It operates field stations at Kavalur & Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, Gauribidanur in Karnataka, and Leh/Hanle in Union Territory of Ladakh.
Eligible young, bright and highly motivated individuals are invited to attend Walk In Interview on 20.11.2023 (Monday) at the Institute Campus, 2nd Block, Koramangala, Sarjapur Road, Bangalore – 560 034 between 09.00 AM to 05.00 PM for the following position to work on the DST-SERB funded Project titled “Understanding the distribution of accreting supermassive black holes pairs in our nearby universe and their effect on galaxy environments using optical, UV and radio observations” for the following position:

A. Research Associate
Essential Education Qualifications and Experience, Emoluments and Age.:
i. Research Associate-I : Rs.58,000/- + HRA Admissible– Age-40 Years : Ph.D. degree in Astrophysics/Cosmology.
Candidate should have research experience in the field of Galaxies, with an knowledge of galaxy morphology, galaxy mergers, AGN and star formation. Some exposure to data analysis in one or more wavebands (such as optical, NIR, radio, X-ray) and Background knowledge of Galaxies, star formation and AGN.

B. Research Fellow
Essential Education Qualifications and Experience, Emoluments and Age.:
i) Rs. 42,000/- +HRA Admissible : –Age-40 years for candidates who have submitted PhD thesis in Astrophysics/Cosmology.
Candidate should have research experience in the field of Galaxies, with an knowledge of galaxy morphology, galaxy mergers, AGN and star formation. Some exposure to data analysis in one or more wavebands (such as optical, NIR, radio, X-ray).
But expecting their defence .Background knowledge of Galaxies, star formation and AGN is essential. Note: The post will be upgraded to Research Associate-I as soon as they clear the defence and upon satisfactory internal project evaluation.
Desirable Qualification for all the above posts: A knowledge of python programming and computational techniques
Desirable experience and skills for all the above posts: Knowledge of computational techniques.
No. of Post: One (01). Please note that the final selection will be for only one post of either Research Fellow or Research Associate-I.
Place of posting: IIA, Bengaluru
Duration: Initially for a period of one year and may be continued based on their satisfactory performance and requirement of the project.
Job Description: Indian Institute of Astrophysics Recruitment 2023
This is a project based RA position and selected RA will work for project related to galaxy mergers, star formation and AGN activity. It will involve handling data, doing observations, computation, proposal preparation and handling of large datasets. The candidate will work under Dr. Mousumi Das and Dr. Sudhanshu Barway.
Note: Candidates attending the walk in Interview should come with duly filled in prescribed application attached with this advertisement with a passport size photograph pasted on the top of the application along with original certificates related to their qualification and experience and also one set of self-certified photo copies failing which the candidature will not be considered.
The candidates should register their name between 09.00 AM to 10.00 AM on the date of Walk In Interview and the candidates coming beyond this time will not be entertained.

- The appointment is purely on contract basis and does not entitle any privileges or service benefits applicable to regular employees of the Institute. No claim whatsoever for regular employment in the Institute shall be entertained.
- The tenure of engagement will be for 01 year initially and extendable annually maximum upto three years (including initial one year) or co-terminus with the completion of the project (whichever is earlier) subject to satisfactory performance of the candidate assessed annually and requirement of the project.
- Age relaxation is permissible to SC / ST /OBC candidates and also physically handicapped candidates as notified by the Govt. of India from time to time.
- The date for determining the upper age limit, qualifications and experience shall be the date of Walk In Interview as indicated above.
- It is open to the Institute to conduct written test to shortlist the candidates for interview in case the attendance of candidates is more.
- The Institute reserves the right to cancel the entire recruitment process at any time or re-advertise if no candidate is found suitable for the position without assigning any reasons whatsoever.
- No correspondence will be entertained with the candidates not selected for interview / appointment. Canvassing in any form will be a disqualification.
