They are also required to take up advanced level course work as required under the Ph.D. rules. School of Liberal Arts is commencing Ph.D. programmes from 2022. Ph.Ds will be offered in English literature, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Philosophy and Political Science.

The main aim of the Ph.D. programme is to enable socially relevant research resulting in a better understanding of the prevailing circumstances.

Another attempt will be to undertake an experimental study, wherein, research can be an accompanying action. Ph.D. from the School of Liberal Arts can be interdisciplinary.

The spirit of the school is to gain a holistic understanding of social sciences. At the same time, strict theoretical rigour will be required for the pursuance of research.

A.  For Computer Science Engineering and Technology

Academic Requirements (Minimum Qualifications): 50% Marks or a minimum CGPA of 5.5 on a 10-point scale in the relevant program in M.Tech/MCA/ME/MSc/MS in any discipline from a recognized University.

B.  For Engineering and Applied Sciences

Academic Requirements (Minimum Qualifications): 60% Marks or a minimum CGPA of 6.5 on a10- point scale in the relevant program in M.E./M.Tech/M.Sc./M.Phil.

To be eligible for applying for admission to Ph.D. Degree the applicant should have:

  1. A Master’s degree in Law/any other discipline Economics, English, History, Management, Political Science and Sociology from a recognized University with not less than 55% marks or its equivalent, provided that candidates with qualifications in social sciences, humanities, and sciences may be admitted to the program if the research they wish to pursue interfaces with the discipline of Law.
  • Candidates who have appeared in the qualifying examination but awaiting results are also eligible to apply, provided that the result of the qualifying examination shall be submitted by the candidate at the time of Registration, failing which their candidature shall be canceled.
    • Applicants with over three years of industry/ teaching/ practicing/ managerial/ professional experience would be preferred.

To be eligible for applying for admission to Ph.D. Degree, the applicant, should have:

  1. Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. program shall have a Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 60 % marks or with an Aggregate CGPA of 6.5 on a scale of 10 (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed).
  2. Professional qualifications such as CA/ ICWA/CS with any Under-graduate Degree are also eligible to apply. Any equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency that is approved, recognized, or authorized by authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accrediting or assure quality and standards of educational institutions.

  1. Candidates applying for the Ph.D. program should have a master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade. Candidates with a master’s degree in other domains are also eligible to apply, provided their area of research is in the broad domain of mass communication and allied area. Research can be conducted in English or Hindi.

  1. Since the School of Liberal Arts is strongly devoted to inter-disciplinary research, candidates with a master’s degree in any discipline from a recognized University with a minimum 55% mark (or its equivalent grade) will be allowed to apply.

  1. Bachelor’s degree with Honours with a rigorous research project in the major or relevant area of study
  2. 75% Marks or 8.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale in the relevant program
  3. The duration of the Undergraduate program shall be a minimum of four years or eight semesters or equivalent.
  4. The School will determine the suitability of the educational qualifications based on the area where the candidate wants to undertake the research.

Note: Candidates who have appeared previously for Ph.D. admission and were not selected are not eligible to apply for a minimum of one year since the last attempt.

Before filling out the Application, Candidates must read and ensure the following:

  1. Merely filling out an application form does not entitle a candidate to admission. The admission is purely merit-based. The University reserves the right to cancel/revoke its offer and/or accept provisional admission at any time. The application fee is not refunded under any circumstances.
  2. Candidates cannot claim admission merely because it is available. University Admission Committee shall decide the minimum cut-offs for merit in various programs, which shall be final.
  3. A candidate must fulfill all the eligibility criteria listed above to be considered for admission.
  4. Candidates applying for the Ph.D. program in the School of Law must also upload a preliminary research proposal along with their application. The preliminary research proposal should be around 2000 words, including a hypothesis, a problem statement, a research methodology, and a preliminary literature survey. All research proposals will be screened through the anti-plagiarism software. Applications received without a research proposal shall not be accepted.
  5. Candidates applying for the Ph.D. program in the School of Management must upload a preliminary research proposal along with the application form. The candidates are encouraged to write about 2000 words, including background to the research problem, preliminary literature review, theoretical model, proposed research methodology, and expected outcomes. Application received without research proposal shall not be processed further.
  6. Candidates applying for the Ph.D. program in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication must submit a 2000-word Statement of Purpose along with the application form. The SoP should include their intended research topic, relevance of the topic in filling up a gap in the research domain, problem statement, preliminary literature review, proposed research methodology, and a paragraph explaining the candidate’s eligibility and experience in the area to take up the work.
  • Candidates applying for the Ph.D. program in the School of Liberal Arts must upload a preliminary research proposal along with the application form. The candidates are encouraged to write about 2000 words, including background to the research problem, preliminary literature review, theoretical model, proposed research methodology, and expected outcomes. Application received without research proposal shall not be processed further.
  • Candidates applying for the Ph.D. program in SEAS must upload a preliminary research proposal along with the application form. The candidates are encouraged to write about 2000 words, including background to the research problem, preliminary literature review, theoretical model, proposed research methodology, and expected outcomes. Application received without research proposal shall not be processed further.
  • Candidates applying for the Ph.D. program in SCSET must upload a preliminary research proposal along with the application form.   1. The doctoral admission committee of respective schools will shortlist applications for admission through a test and interviews based on the applicant’s profile as provided in the application form.

  • During the Personal Interview, the applicant will be assessed on interest and motivation in doing research, conceptual clarity on the chosen area of research, and past academic and research performances.

B. Shortlisting and Selection for the School of Computer Science Engineering and Technology (SCSET)

  1. Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) – a written test conducted by the University/SCSET. Candidates who have cleared the NET or UGC/CSIR (JRF) /ICAR or SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship holder shall be exempted from the written test during the period of validity of the concerned test.
  2. A nominated committee conducts the Interview in the SCSET.
  3. During the personal Interview, the applicant will be assessed on his interest and motivation in doing research, conceptual clarity on the chosen area of research, and past academic and research performances.

C.  Shortlisting and Selection for the School of Law (SoL)

  1. Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) – a written test conducted by the University/ School of Law. Candidates who have cleared the NET or UGC/CSIR (JRF) /ICAR or SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship holder shall be exempted from the written test during the period of validity of the concerned test.
  2. Presentation of Preliminary Research Proposal and Interview: The candidates appearing in BRAT shall be required to present their preliminary research proposal (candidates, thus, will have to submit/upload the same along with the online application). The candidate shall also be interviewed to assess the interest and motivation in doing research, conceptual clarity on the chosen area of research, and past academic and research performances.

D. Shortlisting and Selection for the School of Management

  1. Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) – a written test conducted by the University/School of Management. Candidates who have cleared the NET or UGC/CSIR (JRF) /ICAR or SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship holder shall be exempted from the written test during the period of validity of the concerned test.
  2. After the written examination, the shortlisted students shall be invited for an interview/viva-voce organized by the SOM. The candidates must discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted Department Research Committee. The interview/viva voce shall consider the following aspects, viz. whether: (a) the candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research; (b) the research work can be suitably undertaken at the University/School; (c) the proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge.

E. Shortlisting and Selection for the Times School of Media (TSoM)

  1. Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) – a written test conducted by the University/Times School of Media. Candidates who have cleared the NET or UGC/CSIR (JRF) /ICAR or SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship holder shall be exempted from the written test during the period of validity of the concerned test.
    1. After the written examination, the shortlisted candidates shall be invited for the presentation and viva before a selection committee. The presentation should demonstrate the candidate’s knowledge of the subject, research orientation, and abilities.

The presentation should be aligned with the candidate’s Statement of Purpose submitted and the application form.

F.  Shortlisting and Selection for the School of Liberal Arts (SoLA)

For SoLA, the students in the Ph.D. program shall be admitted through three steps:

  1. Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) – a written test conducted by the University/ SoLA. Candidates who have cleared the NET or UGC/CSIR (JRF) /ICAR or SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship holder shall be exempted from the written test during the period of validity of the concerned test.
    1. Evaluation of the research proposal describing the candidate’s area of interest and how the education/work experience enables the candidate to undertake the research.
    1. A personal interview is mandatory for all candidates.

Details of Written Tests (Weightage, Syllabus, Duration, etc.)

A.     Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Engineering and Applied Sciences)

  1. The examination syllabus for the written test shall be the same as for UGC- NET/CSIR/GATE/ examinations.
  2. Each candidate shall take the written test in the relevant area /field to the student’s discipline.
  3. The minimum duration test will be of one-hour duration. The questions in the test can be both objective and subjective.

B.   Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Law)

  1. The examination syllabus for the written test shall comprise contemporary issues on public policy development.
  2. The written test will also assess the candidate based on the interface of Law with humanities /Business Administration/ Science & Technology/English with sufficient options to choose from the student’s relevant discipline. The test will typically be of two-hour duration, and the questions in the test may be objective and/or subjective.

C.   Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Management)

  1. Duration – 2 hours
  2. Number of Sections – Two – Each carrying 50 percent weightage, and only subjective questions will be asked.

Section A: Research Methodology: Bennett University Ph.D Admission 2023

The syllabus for the Research Methodology section shall be the same as any course on Business Research Methods and Processes in Social Sciences. The candidates must demonstrate knowledge of research processes and an understanding of quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. Also, the candidates should be able to identify, explain, and compare, the key elements of a research proposal/report.

Section B: Principles of Management: Bennett University Ph.D Admission 2023

The syllabus for Principles of Management shall include knowledge about basic functions and skills under Management, management theories and philosophies and their application, and an understanding of the relationship between strategic, tactical, and operational plans. Also, they should be able to recognize the part communication plays in the management function.

D.  Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Media)

  1. The entrance test syllabus shall consist of general aptitude and knowledge of media domains, basic research methodology, and communication research methods.
  2. The test will be of 90 minutes and shall consist of subjective, analytical questions.
  3. Candidates must pass the written test with a minimum of 50% marks to qualify for the viva.

E.   Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Liberal Arts)

  1. Duration: 2 hours
    1. Twenty-five marks for the general test, consisting of tests of vocabulary, comprehension, logic, and data interpretation
    1. Forty-five marks for the subject test.
    1. The candidate must score a minimum of 50% marks in the entrance test to qualify for the Interview.
    1. The candidate’s competence and required knowledge for the proposed research;
    1. The research area matches the research interests of a faculty member from the School.
    1. The proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge. The candidates must upload the research proposal while submitting the application form.

1) The University reserves the right to revise or change the admission/written test pattern with prior notification.

Schedules of Admissions: Bennett University Ph.D Admission 2023

  1. The University opens Ph.D. admissions with a defined number of seats in different categories (Full time/Part Time/Sponsored and applicability of Teaching Assistantship). It may review and allocate additional seats subject to capacity.
  2. The call for Ph.D. admissions remains open for programs with vacant seats out of approved numbers throughout the academic year.
  3. The Schools/ Departments conduct entrance tests at Quarterly/ Semester/ Annual intervals as per university rules, followed by Interviews, and submit results for further approval and notification.
  4. The student should fulfill minimum attendance rules as per university regulations.
  5. The student rejected in an attempt will not be allowed to appear in BRAT for at least one year as per University Ph.D. Ordinances.

  3. Candidates applying for the Ph.D. programs must also upload a preliminary research proposal, as explained above, along with the application. Applications received without the same shall not be accepted.
  4. Cost of Form – Rs 1500/-.
  5. Admission granted to the student may be revoked for noncompliance/not meeting the admission criteria/ being found ineligible, even if the same is detected later. All admissions will be subject to verification of facts from the original certificates/ documents of the candidates. The decision of the Admission Committee of the University regarding the eligibility of any applicant shall be final.

Institutional Fee*: Bennett University Ph.D Admission 2023

The fee shall be ₹ 1,00,000/- per year. It shall be payable in two installments of ₹ 50,000/-per semester.

Security Deposit – ₹ 30000/- (One time, payable at the time of Registration, Refundable after completion or withdrawal from the program)

An additional mandatory Examination Fees Charges of ₹ 12,000 per year, payable twice at ₹ 6,000 at the time of Registration in the semester.

Degree Digitalization Charges will be ₹ 2,500.

One-time Alumni contribution is ₹ 1,500.

Ph.D. Assistantship: Bennett University Ph.D Admission 2023

Financial Support will be provided to selected Fulltime Ph.D. students on a vacancy basis in the form of Ph.D. Assistantship, subject to terms and conditions as per the University rules.

Category 1: INR twenty-five thousand per month plus hostel accommodation on a triple-sharing basis and dining from the University Mess. The candidate needs an average of eight hours of Teaching Assistantship per week.

Category 2: INR forty thousand per month (with no hostel accommodation and dining facility from the University Mess). The candidate needs an average of eight hours of Teaching Assistantship per week.

Notes:

  1. Conditions for continuation and total duration of applicability of the Ph.D. Assistantship shall be as per the Ph.D. regulations of the University.

  2. OCI (Overseas Citizen of India). A person registered as an “Overseas Citizen of India” (OCI) cardholder under section 7A of the Citizenship Act, 1955.
  3. NRI shall be a student whose mother or father, first-degree relation including the real brother and sister, or paternal and maternal grandparents are NRIs.
  4. This quota may also be availed by wards of NRI persons, who should be the nearest relation to include real brother and sister of father and mother i.e., real uncle and real aunt, first degree-paternal and maternal cousins. However, such persons, who have looked after such student as the guardian, need to produce evidence to the effect, along with an affidavit signed by authorities in the country where such person is residing.
  5. NRI, in this context, shall imply an Indian Citizen who stays abroad for employment/carrying on business or vocation outside India or stays abroad under the circumstances indicating an intention for an uncertain duration of stay abroad.
  6. Students who have done their PG from a foreign University and fall under categories (i) to (v) above shall be treated under NRI category admission.
  7. International Student – All students who are foreign country passport holders and have passed their PG exams from a foreign University.
