University of Burdwan Ph.D. Programme Admission 2024

Online applications are invited from the eligible intending candidates for admission to the Ph.D. Programme 2023 and State Funded Fellowship 2023 under Faculty Councils (Science) and Faculty Council (Arts, Commerce, Law etc.), The University of Burdwan. Online form will be available in the University website (www.buruniv.ac.in) on and from 01.05.2024 to 15.05.2024.

2.1 Application Fee Payment

A non-refundable amount of Rs. 250/- (Rupees Two Hundred and Fifty only) as application fee is to be paid through (State Bank Collect) the following link:

Applicants are advised to keep a copy of the receipt of payment in either pdf or jpeg format for uploading in the designated field of online application form. Insertion of transaction id and uploading of receipt is mandatory in absence of which a form cannot be sübmitted.

2.2 Enrollment of Academic Bank of Credit (Indian Candidates only)

Online submission of application form by a candidate does not automatically ensure his/her admission to the Programme.

Eligibility: University of Burdwan Ph.D. Programme Admission 2024

Eligibility criteria for admission to Ph.D. Programme

Candidates holding a 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or a professional degree or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree of The University of Burdwan in the subject concerned or alled/relevant subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC-7 point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorised by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, may apply to the Secretary of the Faculty Council for Post-graduate Studies concerned in the prescribed form for admission to the Ph.D. programme in any of the subjects in which the Doctoral Degree may have been instituted.

In case of a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree Programme (with research) should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed.

(ii) A relaxation of 5% of marks or equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC and notification of the state government from time to time.

(iii) The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualification marks without including the grace mark procedures.

(iv) Subject to fulfillment of the conditions stipulated in clause (1) or (ii) or (iii) above,

(a) Candidates who have cleared the full-time regular M.Phil. Course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7 point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to Ph.D. degree in an integrated doctoral Programme. A relaxation of 5% marks from 55% to 50% or an equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.

(b) A candidate whose M.Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme.

(c) Candidates possessing a Degree, considered equivalent to the M.Phil. Degree of The University of Burdwan, from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. Programme.

(d) State level reservation policy shall be taken into consideration while admitting students in the Ph.D. Programme,

3.2 Eligibility criteria for applying State Funded Fellowship

State Funded Fellowships will be awarded to the candidates purely on the basis of the merit and to be eligible for State Funded Fellowship the candidates with NET / S * ET qualification are to be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme of the University of Burdwan.

Procedure for Admission: University of Burdwan Ph.D. Programme Admission 2024

4.1 Written Entrance Test

For getting admission to the Ph.D. Programme a candidate shall have to appear for the written test of 100 marks, with 50 questions of 2 marks each in Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) model on OMR sheet. Candidates will be allowed to retain the carbon copy of the OMR sheet with them after the completion of the examination. Each candidate has to secure minimum qualifying marks of 50% in the Written Entrance Test to qualify for the final viva voce. The syllabus of the Entrance Test shall cover two sections, viz, Research Methodology and the specific subject with 25 questions each from the two sections.

A relaxation of 5% marks will be allowed in the Entrance Test for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/differently-abled category, Economically Weaker Section (EWS), and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission and notification of the state government from time to time.

4.2 Exemption from Written Entrance Test

Candidates who have a full-time regular M.Phil. Degree with course work or have qualified in the UGC-NET (including JRF)/CSIR-NET (including JRF)/SET/SLET/GATE/ICMR/DBT or similar National level tests or teacher fellowship shall be exempted from appearing at the Entrance Test for admission to the Ph.D. Programme.

4.3 Final Viva-Voce / Interview

After qualifying in the Written Entrance Test or getting exemption from it, each candidate shall have to appear for an interview/Viva-voce of 30 marks to be conducted by the Doctoral Committee at the level of individual University Department of Studies/University School or Centre for Studies concerned. At the time of interview, the Doctoral Committee will objectively assess the research interest of the candidate in the relevant field/area as well as his/her past academic records, and award marks giving weightage to these components as follows:

Candidates qualified through the Primary Phase Written Entrance Test by securing minimum qualifying marks of 50, will get a weightage of 70% for Academic records and 30% for the performance in the Final Phase Viva-Voce in preparation of the final result.

All in-service applicants (including those intending to prosecute Ph.D. as part-time scholar shall have to apply through proper channel and they have to submit No Objection Certificate from their employer at the time of admission.

Reservation of Seats: University of Burdwan Ph.D. Programme Admission 2024

Seats for candidates belonging to various categories (22% for SC, 6% for ST, 10% for OBCA, 7% for OBCB and 10% for EWS of total seats) are reserved as per the directives of the Government of West Bengal, Further, D.A. candidates will enjoy a 5% reservation in each of the categories, i.e. in SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B and in the Unreserved or UR category as per the Rules framed by the Government of West Bengal.

It will entirely be the responsibility of the candidate to prove his/her eligibility in terms of minimum educational qualifications and for claiming reservation under a specific category, if any, at the time of admission.

5.1 Reservation against SC/ST/OBCA/OBCB Category

Candidates, who are seeking reservation against SC/ST/OBCA/OBCB category, must have to upload the photocopy of the respective caste certificate in support of his/her claim and to produce original caste certificate along with a photocopy of the same at the time of verification of the documents in the department where he/she intends to get admission in Ph.D. Programme. The Certificate must be obtained from the competent authority to authenticate their claim. Relevant certificate must conform to THE W.B. GOVT, MEMO NO.1813-BCW/MR- 94/11 dated Kolkata, 20th June, 2011. The certificate must be obtained from one of the authorities listed below:

(0) Deputy Director, Backward Classes Welfare, West Bengal and Commissioner, Backward Classes Welfare, West Bengal in case of candidates claiming to be Scheduled Cast or Scheduled Tribe residing in any part of West Bengal.

(ii) Deputy Commissioner of Land Revenue, Kolkata, Collector of Stamp Revenue, Kolkata, Metropolitan Magistrate, Kolkata, Addl. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Kolkata, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Kolkata, 1st Class Stipendiary Magistrate, Executive Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Officer, Deputy Collector, Addl. District Magistrate, Collector and District Magistrate with their respective jurisdictions in case of candidates claiming to be Scheduled Cast or Scheduled Tribe and ordinarily residing within such jurisdictions.

Reservation for SC/ST/OBCA/OBCB candidates for admission will be as per Govt. Rules, vide Govt. Order No.:07-Edn (U)/10-89/13.- dated, 2nd January, 2014 “for admission to different courses, an SC or ST candidate getting admission should have obtained in the previous examination; qualifying marks not lower by more than 25% of the marks obtained by the last candidate of the general category.” and “for admission to different courses, an OBCA or OBCB candidate getting admission should have obtained in the previous examination; qualifying marks not lower by more than 10% of the marks obtained by the last candidate of the general category.”

5.2 Reservation against Differently-Abled (DA) Category

Candidates, who are seeking reservation against D.A. category, must upload the self-attested photo copy of the Certificate obtained from the competent authority to authenticate their claim and the certificate must be obtained from the authority not below the rank of a Superintendent of Sub-Divisional Hospital. In the certificate, the extent of Physical disability must not be less than 40%. However, such candidates have to produce all relevant medical reports as well as the certificate in original before the department at the time of verification.

5.3 Reservation against EWS Category

Reservation for EWS candidates for admission will be as per reservation rules vide Govt. Order No.: 339-Edn (CS)/OM-74L/2023 dated. 26th May, 2023, issued by Department of Higher Education, 6th Floor, Bikash Bhavan, Kolkata-91. Candidates claiming reservation against EWS Category (relevant certificate is required) seats must submit the relevant EWS certificates issued in their favour by one of the authorities as per O.M. No. 325-PAR (AR)/3P-1/2019 dated 09.07.2019 of Personnel & Administrative Reforms, Govt. Of West Bengal and Memo No. 959- BCW/MR-52/2019 dated 18.05.2023 of Backward Classes Welfare Department, Govt. Of West Bengal.

As per sub-rule (1) (e) of rule 6 of the Notification No. 07-Edn(U)/1U-89/13, dated 2 January, 2014, issued by the Government of West Bengal, Higher Education Department “in case the number of seats reserved for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Category-A and Other Backward Classes, Category-B in Post-graduate and Doctoral courses including Medicine, Dental Science and Nursing is less than 0.5 in each stream, a 100 point roster for admission as specified in the Schedule appended to these rules shall be followed for filling up the seats.”

Admission of International Students in Ph.D Programme

Each supervisor can guide up to two international research scholars on a supernumerary basis over and above the permitted number of Ph.D. scholars as specified in Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree, Regulations, 2022, published in the Gazette of India on 7th November, 2022.

The BRS of the concerned subject/discipline will decide their own selection procedure for Ph.D. admission of international students keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the statutory/regulatory bodies of the University from time to time.
