Australia Announces 18-Member Squad for ODI Series Against India

Australia has revealed its 18-member squad for the upcoming ODI series against India, scheduled to commence on September 22nd. This squad marks a significant boost for Australia, as several key players, including captain Pat Cummins, make their return after recovering from injuries.

During the recent white-ball tour of South Africa, Australia was without the services of many of their regular players who were recuperating from injuries sustained during the challenging Ashes series and subsequent events. Notable absentees included Pat Cummins and Steve Smith, both recovering from wrist injuries, and Mitchell Starc, who experienced soreness in his groin and shoulder upon returning from the UK.

Glenn Maxwell, initially part of the South Africa tour, aggravated his ankle injury during training ahead of the T20I series and returned home for the birth of his child. However, Australia receives a significant boost as Maxwell has been declared fit and will be part of the India tour.

Cameron Green, who suffered a concussion in the first game of the South Africa tour, missed three ODIs but returned for the final match after following an eight-day concussion protocol. He is now set to feature against India.

Australia’s Squad for the ODI Series Against India:

  • Pat Cummins (Captain)
  • Sean Abbott
  • Alex Carey
  • Nathan Ellis
  • Cameron Green
  • Josh Hazlewood
  • Josh Inglis
  • Spencer Johnson
  • Marnus Labuschagne
  • Mitchell Marsh
  • Glenn Maxwell
  • Tanveer Sangha
  • Matt Short
  • Steve Smith
  • Mitchell Starc

Notable omissions from the squad are Travis Head and Ashton Agar. Agar had suffered a minor calf tear before the South Africa tour, and although he featured in the first ODI, he missed the subsequent games due to soreness and flew back to Australia for the birth of his child.

Travis Head faces a tight deadline to be fit for the upcoming World Cup, as he will return to Australia instead of joining the squad in India after fracturing his hand during the fourth ODI. Surgery is being considered as one of the options for his recovery, and the 29-year-old is in a race against time to make it to the World Cup, which begins in three weeks.

Two uncapped players, Matt Short and Spencer Johnson, have earned spots in the squad, showcasing Australia’s commitment to nurturing fresh talent.

Australia has until September 28th to make any changes to the World Cup squad, with subsequent alterations subject to approval by the ICC.
