Isheeta, played by Tillotama Shome, arrives home earlier than expected from work, only to be greeted by a shocking sight. As she opens the door to her apartment, she finds her maid, Seema (Amruta Subhash), engaged in passionate lovemaking, accompanied by moans of pleasure.

Caught off guard, Isheeta is faced with a dilemma. Should she quickly retreat in embarrassment, even though it is her own house? Should she consider terminating Seema’s employment for turning her abode into an intimate space? However, Isheeta is unable to ignore the undeniable thrill she experiences witnessing an act unfold in the very room where she sleeps alone every night.

This captivating premise, crafted by Konkona Sensharma and Pooja Tolani and beautifully directed by Sensharma herself, stands out as the most impactful segment in Lust Stories 2, the Netflix anthology film. In the previous edition, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, Anurag Kashyap, and Karan Johar took the directorial reins. In the current edition, new directors emerge, maintaining the same one-woman-to-three-men ratio.

Sensharma’s segment, titled “The Mirror,” is the sole entry in the collection that boldly explores sexual desire with directness and depth within the constraints of the short-format medium. The relationship between Isheeta and Seema delves into themes of consent, voyeurism, and the socioeconomic divide between employer and employee. The film is imbued with the reality of Mumbai, a metropolis of cramped dwellings where privacy is a rare luxury. It artfully examines the erotic possibilities—and the boundaries—of taking a fantasy too far.

Anand Bansal, the cinematographer, exhibits precision in his framing and skillfully employs a range of lenses to highlight the absurdity of Isheeta’s situation while capturing the sensuality between Seema and her partner, portrayed by Shrikant Yadav. Under Sensharma’s careful direction, the actors deliver brilliant performances that ensure “The Mirror” leaves a lasting impact. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the other three films in the anthology.

In R Balki’s “Made for Each Other,” co-written by Balki and Rishi Virmani, there is a portrayal of a cool and sassy grandmother, a character often encountered in movies. This elderly woman, portrayed by Neena Gupta, imparts valuable advice to her granddaughter, Veda (Mrunal Pathak), and Veda’s prospective husband, Arjun (Angad Bedi). The grandmother suggests that if one can test-drive a car before purchasing it, why not assess sexual compatibility before committing to marriage?

The message conveyed in “Made for Each Other” is as unconventional as the treatment is suitable for a public service announcement. The grandmother character, known for speaking in catchy phrases, boldly states, “Embarrassing is better than depressing.”

However, the film merely scratches the surface of this one-liner, offering little beyond Mrunal Thakur’s relatable giggly reactions to her forward-thinking grandmother.

In “Made for Each Other,” humor is utilized to divert attention from the discomfort of discussing desire. Similarly, Amit Ravindernath Sharma’s “Tilchatta” and Sujoy Ghosh’s “Sex with the Ex” take alternative approaches to exploring the realm of sexual passion.

Amit Ravindernath Sharma’s “Tilchatta,” co-written with Saurabh Choudhary, features Kajol, who excels at portraying women with unresolved emotional wounds, as the wife of a corrupt landlord portrayed by Kumud Mishra. The film fails to evoke any pleasure associated with intimacy, as it is filled with unpleasant events and carries a strong moralistic tone.

On the other hand, in Sujoy Ghosh’s “Sex with the Ex,” the CEO of a company, played by Vijay Varma, unexpectedly encounters his former wife, portrayed by Tamannaah Bhatia. She is an attractive and alluring woman who had abandoned him years ago for reasons that are about to be revealed.

Despite its predictable twist, “Sex with the Ex” could have been even shorter in duration. Erratic rather than erotic, this film, along with the others, may prompt viewers to utilize the skip option and revisit the captivating and thought-provoking world presented in “The Mirror.”
