About Jadavpur University

Jadavpur University has a rich history intertwined with India’s freedom movement, particularly starting from the Swadeshi Movement in 1905-1906 when Bengal was divided. During this tumultuous period, there was a strong need to challenge the hegemony of the British establishment, and education emerged as a potent tool for resistance. To address this, the National Council of Education (NCE) was established with the objective of providing literary, scientific, and technical education under national control.

The NCE aimed to promote education on national lines and foster self-reliance. Its establishment was made possible through the support of individuals like Raja Subodh Chandra Mallik, Brajendra Kishore Roychowdhury of Gouripur, Sir Rash Behari Ghosh (the first President of NCE), poet Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, who contributed both their scholarship and financial resources.

In 1910, the Society for the Promotion of Technical Education in Bengal, which oversaw the Bengal Technical Institute (later renamed the College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal), merged with the NCE. Consequently, the NCE also took responsibility for managing the College of Engineering and Technology, which effectively functioned as a university by 1940. After India gained independence, the Government of West Bengal, with the approval of the Indian government, enacted the necessary legislation to establish Jadavpur University on December 24, 1955.

Since its inception, Jadavpur University has continued to play a significant role in education, research, and the intellectual development of the region. It remains an esteemed institution that carries forward the legacy of the freedom movement and the ideals of self-reliance and national control in education.
