Women's Reservation Bill passed in Rajya Sabha

Historic Moment: Women's Reservation Bill Passed Unanimously in Indian Parliament

In a historic moment that marked a significant stride towards gender equality in India, the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, was passed unanimously by the Rajya Sabha.

The bill, which sought to reserve 33% of seats in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies for women, had already sailed through the Lok Sabha the day before.

The atmosphere in Parliament on that Thursday night was charged with anticipation. The women's reservation Bill secured an overwhelming 214 votes in its favor, with none opposing it in the Upper House.

There was no abstention during the voting proceedings, presided over by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were adjourned sine die, bringing an end to the special session of Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had arrived in the Upper House before the voting process began, expressed his gratitude to all members for their support to the Bill.

In a post on social media, Prime Minister Modi exclaimed, "A defining moment in our nation’s democratic journey! Congratulations to 140 crore Indians.

I thank all the Rajya Sabha MPs who voted for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. Such unanimous support is indeed heartening."

He went on to emphasize the significance of this legislation, saying, "With the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in Parliament, we usher in an era of stronger representation and empowerment for the women of India.

This is not merely a legislation; it is a tribute to the countless women who have made our nation. India has been enriched by their resilience and contributions.

As we celebrate today, we are reminded of the strength, courage, and indomitable spirit of all the women of our nation. This historic step is a commitment to ensuring their voices are heard even more effectively."

Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded the passage of the Bill as a historic milestone, highlighting Prime Minister Modi's commitment to gender equality and inclusive governance. He said, "Where there is a will, there is a way."

The debate in the Rajya Sabha saw Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal questioning the Congress party's newfound support for the OBC community and accusing them of sidelining OBC reservation.

Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjuna Kharge, while extending support to the women's reservation Bill, sought clarity on the implementation timeline and whether OBCs would be included in the reservation.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the criticism of the government's delay in bringing the Bill, highlighting various schemes aimed at empowering women.

She mentioned achievements such as providing gas connections, toilets, and maternity leave, along with opening doors for women in defense and police forces.

Sitharaman also linked women's empowerment to the government's actions on Article 370 and the criminalization of instant triple talaq, emphasizing justice for women.

Responding to questions about why delimitation would wait until 2026, Sitharaman explained the historical context and the need to readjust seats after each Census.

In a spirited exchange, BJP President J.P. Nadda targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for demanding OBC reservation within the women's quota and highlighted the BJP's commitment to OBC representation.

Nadda concluded by emphasizing the significance of the moment, saying, "In India’s traditions, women have always held an elevated position. Today if we talk about ISRO, there have been huge contributions by our women scientists."

The passage of the women's reservation Bill marked a momentous occasion in India's history, symbolizing a significant step towards gender equality and women's empowerment in the country.

The unanimous support from members of both Houses of Parliament reaffirmed the nation's commitment to ensuring women's voices are heard and their rights protected.
