Ptosis is a medical term that refers to the drooping or sagging of an upper eyelid.

It can affect one or both eyes and can occur gradually over time or suddenly, depending on the underlying cause.

Ptosis can be congenital, meaning it is present at birth, or acquired,

developing later in life due to various factors such as aging, injury, or neurological conditions.

Ptosis: upper eyelid

Depending on the severity of ptosis, it can partially or completely obstruct the vision in the affected eye(s),

leading to functional impairment and cosmetic concerns.

The condition may result from a weakening of the muscle that raises the eyelid,

the tendon that connects the muscle to the eyelid, or the nerves that control the muscle.

It can also be caused by an underlying health issue,

such as a neurological disorder, a systemic disease, or a previous eye surgery.

Treatment for ptosis depends on its underlying cause and severity.

In some cases, no specific treatment may be necessary,

However, severe or persistent ptosis may require surgical intervention to lift and tighten the eyelid, improving both vision and appearance.
