OpenAI, the artificial intelligence firm behind ChatGPT, has experienced significant leadership changes. Sam Altman, the co-founder, was initially ousted as CEO but has been reinstated after just five days.
OpenAI has expanded its board of directors, and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers is reported to be joining.
Summers is expected to play a role in recruiting additional board members and addressing governance concerns, particularly from major backer Microsoft, which currently has no representatives on the board.
The current board includes Bret Taylor, former co-CEO of Salesforce, as the chairman, Adam D’Angelo, CEO of Quora, and now Larry Summers.
Sam Altman and an executive from Microsoft are also mentioned as potential future directors.
It's unclear if Greg Brockman, a close ally of Altman, will return to the board. Brockman had initially announced his intention to step down but later resigned from his role as OpenAI’s president in protest of Altman’s ouster.
As an OpenAI board member, Summers, a former Harvard president and economist, expressed views on AI, stating in an April interview that technologies like ChatGPT could impact higher-skilled roles before lower-skilled ones.
Summers has been involved with Silicon Valley, sitting on the board of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey’s Block Inc. since 2011.
Altman's return follows a turbulent period at OpenAI, starting with his sudden removal due to communication concerns.
His acceptance of a position at Microsoft further fueled upheaval, with over 700 staff members threatening to quit if Altman wasn't reinstated.
