Niners trade QB Trey Lance to Cowboys for fourth-round pick

Th San Francisco 49ers have traded quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys, as reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

In exchange for Lance, the 49ers will receive a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, as confirmed by NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.

Trey Lance was selected by the 49ers as the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after the team traded three first-round picks to the Miami Dolphins to move up and acquire him.

However, it was recently announced that Lance would be the third-string quarterback on the 49ers' depth chart,

behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold, with Darnold winning the competition for the backup role.

49ers general manager John Lynch expressed his appreciation for Lance as a young talent and mentioned that circumstances, including injuries, played a role in the decision.

He emphasized that the team had put in effort, but it didn't work out, and Dallas showed a strong interest in acquiring Lance.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed his belief that Trey Lance still has the potential for success, either with the 49ers or another team in the future.

Lance's tenure with the 49ers was marked by limited playing time, largely due to injuries.

Trey Lance, with only eight games played over two years for the 49ers, had fewer appearances than most top-five picks in the common draft era. Now, he gets a fresh start with the Dallas Cowboys.

In Dallas, Dak Prescott remains the starting quarterback, with Cooper Rush and Will Grier as backups.

Trey Lance is expected to become the third-string quarterback for the Cowboys but will have the opportunity to develop further.

At 23 years old, Lance still has the potential to fulfill the promise that was initially associated with him.

The financial aspect of the trade includes Lance being due $6.25 million, fully guaranteed, over the next two seasons, with the Cowboys having the option for a fifth-year if the opportunity arises.
