Applications are invited for admission to the Ph.D. programme in Bengali Language & Literature, University of Calcutta for the session 2024.
Eligibility Criteria: University of Calcutta Ph.D. Programme in Bengali Language & Literature
Candidates having MA in Bengali with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7- point scale (relaxation will be given as per norms) are eligible to apply. Admission to the Ph.D. programme will be done through a Research Eligibility Test (RET) followed by an interview.
However candidates exempted from the RET are required to appear for the interview only.
Details about RET
The list of eligible candidates to appear in the Written Research Eligibility Test (RET) will be notified on 30/01/2025 on the University of Calcutta website.
The RET will be held on 18/02/2025, Time: 1:00 pm, Duration: 2:30 hrs. Marks: 70 [The written test will be held on following basis:
A) MCQ–History of Bengali Language & Literature (20 questions 1 marks each, negative marking will be applicable).
B) Short answer type questions Research Methodology, Bengali Language & Literature (6 questions 5 marks each).
C) One Essay Bengali Language & Literature (20 marks).
Candidates must obtain qualifying marks-50% for General category and 45% for SC/ST category to qualify for Viva-voce).
The venue of the RET is the classroom of the Department of Bengali Language & Literature, 1″ Floor, Asutosh Building. Asutosh Shiksha Prangan, 87/1, College Street Kolkata-700073).
Research Eligibility Test (RET) Exemption
Candidates with MA in Bengali Language and Literature/Bangla with MPhil or NET/SET/SLET are exempted from RET. All other candidates are required to appear for the RET.

- Candidates should apply in the attached proforma along with an application fee of Rs. 100/- by online payment through SBI Collect https://www.onlinesbi.sbi/sbicollect/icollecthome.htm, by clicking on Educational Institutions →Calcutta University Miscellaneous Fee.
- Submit the filled in application form along with photocopy of all supporting documents and SBI Payment Receipt at the office of the Department of Bengali Language & Literature, 1″ Floor, Asutosh Building, Asutosh Shiksha Prangan, 87/1,College Street, Kolkata-700073 on all working days(Monday to Friday) between 12 Noon to 4 PM.

The list of successful candidates in RET will be published on 07/03/2025 on the University of Calcutta website. Both RET qualified and RET exempted candidates are required to appear for the interview on 18/03/2025, 19/03/2025 and 20/03/2025 from 12 noon in the Department of Bengali Language & Literature, Ist Floor, Asutosh Building. University of Calcutta, 87/1 College Street, Kolkata 700073. Tentative date of publication of merit panel is on 28/03/2025.
The entire admission process and all other matters related to the Ph.D. Programme in the Department of Bengali will be governed by the University of Calcutta, (Regulation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D.), Regulations 2016 and/or the time to time changes made by the concerned authority on the same.
