Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW)
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) is a learned society that serves as the forum, voice, and conscience of the arts and sciences in the Netherlands. Founded in 1808, the KNAW is made up of leading Dutch scholars and scientists who are elected to membership based on their outstanding contributions to their fields.
The KNAW’s mission is to promote the quality and visibility of Dutch scholarship and science, both nationally and internationally. It does so by supporting research, awarding prizes and fellowships, organizing scientific meetings and public events, and advising government and society on matters related to science and scholarship.
The KNAW is headquartered in Amsterdam and is governed by a board of directors consisting of elected members. It is organized into several sections, each of which focuses on a specific field of study, such as mathematics, physics, and social sciences. The KNAW also operates several research institutes, including the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS), the International Institute for Social History (IISH), and the Hubrecht Institute.
Overall, the KNAW plays an important role in promoting and advancing scholarship and science in the Netherlands, as well as representing the interests of the academic community in the public sphere.
