Recruitment Assistant Professor School of Development Studies at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS)-Mumbai Campus. Required Assistant Professor (3 No) on Contract Basis for TISS-ECI MA programme of School of Development Studies at TISS-Mumbai Campus.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (www.tiss.edu), established in the year 1936 is a Deemed to be University, fully funded by the University Grants Commission, Govt of India. TISS is a Grade I University with NAAC score of 3.94/4 and NIRF 2020 rank of 34 among Indian Universities and 57 overall.

With campuses at Mumbai (Main) and off-campuses at Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad, TISS offers over 50 Post Graduate programmes, 18 Doctoral programmes, and 3 Under Graduate programmes in a range of socially relevant inter-disciplinary and applied social science disciplines, and over 30 B.Voc. programmes.

The School of Development Studies (SDS) was created in 2012 to contribute towards the holistic discussion on the politics and practices of development and democracy in post-colonial societies.

Focusing on the interconnection between global, national and local processes of social change, the vision of the School is to promote diverse ways of interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity in the generation of social science knowledge and to actively engage with critical issues of development, democracy, governance, poverty, and equity through excellence in research, teaching and advocacy.

The School of Development Studies invites application for three posts (3 No) of Assistant Professor to be filled on contract basis, initially for a period of one year and extendable based on performance of the candidate and requirements of the Institute.

The candidates will be required to teach in the soon to be launched M.A. International Electoral Management and Practices program of TISS (supported by Election Commission of India), coordinate fieldwork activities of the students, provide mentorship to students who need assistance, supervise assessment, guide Masters’ research dissertation and carry out other academic and research activities necessary for smooth functioning of the school.

Persons are expected to be trained in the comparative perspectives of teaching theories and practices of Democracy, Political Institutions, Election Studies, Electoral Behaviour and Mass Politics, Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and Management of Elections, Electoral Administration among other things.

Remuneration: Basic Pay of Rs. 57700/- (Level 10 as per 7 CPC)

Eligibility Criteria:

Educational Qualification: Eligibility (A or B):

A.

  1. A Master’s degree with 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point-scale wherever the grading system is followed) in Political Science/ International Relation/ Political Demography & Population Studies/Law-Governance Management, or other related areas of Elections Studies & Electoral Management from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.
  2. Besides fulfilling the above qualifications, the candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC, or a similar test accredited by the UGC, like SLET/SET or who are or have been awarded a Ph. D. degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016 and their amendments from time to time as the case may be exempted from NET/SLET/SET:

Provided, the candidates registered for the Ph.D. programme prior to July 11, 2009, shall be governed by the provisions of the then existing Ordinances/Bye-laws/Regulations of the Institution awarding the degree and such Ph.D. candidates shall be exempted from the requirement of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of ‘Assistant Professor’ subject to the or equivalent positions in Universities/Colleges/Institutions fulfilment of the following conditions: –

  1. The Ph.D. degree of the candidate has been awarded in a regular mode;
  2. The Ph.D. thesis has been evaluated by at least two external examiners;
  3. An open Ph.D. viva voce of the candidate has been conducted;
  4. The Candidate has published two research papers from his/her Ph.D. work, out of which at least one is in a referred journal;
  5. The candidate has presented at least two papers based on his/her Ph.D. work in conferences/seminars sponsored/funded/supported by the UGC/ICSSR/CSIR or any similar agency.

The fulfilment of these conditions is to be certified by the Registrar or the Dean (Academic Affairs) of the University concerned.

Note: NET/SLET/SET shall also not be required for such Masters Programmes in disciplines for which NET/SLET/SET is not conducted by the UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC, like SLET/SET.

OR

B. The Ph.D. degree has been obtained from a foreign university/institution with a ranking among top 500 in the World University Ranking (at any time) by any one of the following:

  1. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)
  2. the Times Higher Education (THE) or
  3. the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Political Science with the specialization in political theory with the focus on democracy and democratization, Comparative Politics, State Politics, Election Studies,
  • Electoral Behaviour and Mass Politics, Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and Management of Elections, Electoral Reforms, Electoral Statistics and Data Analytics, Social Science Methods, Political Anthropology, Population Studies with experience of election studies.
  • Candidates with prior teaching/research experience of two years and/or the experience of development of curriculum in areas of political science and electoral management will be preferred.
  • Candidates with the experience of working with Election Commission of India, capacity building of election officials and election management bodies (EMB’s)
  • Candidates with Post-Doctoral qualifications in the related areas of expertise are also encouraged to apply.
  • Research and published work in peer-reviewed journals in the relevant fields.

Other Conditions:

  • The Institute reserves the right to relax the qualifications of the candidate based on the work experience and to relax age in the case of persons already holding comparable positions in a University/Research Institution of repute.
  • The Institute reserves the right to invite persons for interviews who may not have applied as per the above procedure and not fill up the vacancy advertised.
  • Since applications received may be short-listed, merely possessing the prescribed qualifications and the requisite experience would not entitle a person to be called for the interview.
  • The post is unreserved, but candidates belonging to the reserved category are strongly encouraged to apply.

The women applicants are waived from payment of application fees. The application will be valid only on receipt of the application fee if applicable. The shortlisted candidates will be sent a call letter and a link for the interview. The online interview in Zoom Platform will be conducted in the third week of September 2022.

Verification of documents:

The shortlisted candidates are required to send scanned copies of their coloured passport size photograph, and self-attested photocopies of relevant certificates in support of the essential qualification & experience. Original certificates will be verified only for the selected candidate at the time of appointment.

Note: The selected candidate has to join the post within 15 days of intimation of selection.
