About Mahatma Gandhi University

The Mahatma Gandhi University was established in the year 2018 under The Purba Medinipur University Act 2017 and The Purba Medinipur University (Amendment) Act 2018. The university’s primary mission is aligned with the Government of West Bengal’s vision to provide high-quality teaching, training, and research centers across various fields, including humanities, social sciences, and basic sciences. This commitment to excellence in education serves both the local community and the nation as a whole.

The Mahatma Gandhi University is located in the Purba Medinipur district, specifically in the Kapaseria Mouza area within the Mahishadal block, which is part of the Haldia subdivision. Purba Medinipur has historical significance due to the presence of the ancient port of ‘Tamralipta,’ which was documented by the Greco-Egyptian writer Ptolemy around 150 AD. This port played a vital role during the reign of Samrat Ashoka, the Mauryan emperor.

Additionally, Purba Medinipur has a rich history in the freedom movement against British colonial rule. It has produced notable figures such as Hemchandra Kanungo, Birendranath Sasmal, and Sushil Kumar Dhara, who made significant contributions to India’s struggle for independence. Notably, in 1942, during Gandhiji’s call for the Non-cooperation movement, Matangini Hazra, affectionately known as ‘Gandhi Buri’ in Bengali, meaning ‘Old Lady Gandhi,’ was a local hero who dedicated herself to the cause.

Geographically, this region is situated in the Lower Indo-Gangetic Plain, adjacent to the Eastern Coastal area, and boasts abundant natural resources. With this unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage, the Mahatma Gandhi University is committed to advancing knowledge and higher learning, with a particular emphasis on languages, history, and rural development. It aims to be a beacon of education and research in this historically and culturally rich part of West Bengal, contributing to the growth and development of the region and the nation as a whole.
