ABOUT MAHATMA GANDHI CENTRAL UNIVERSITY
MAHATMA GANDHI CENTRAL UNIVERSITY (MGCU) came into existence by an Act of Parliament, Central Universities (Amendment) Act 2014 (No. 35 of 2014). The University became functional on 3rd February 2016. MGCU is situated in Motihari (Bankat), on National Highway 28.
MGCU is proving to be an excellent centre of Higher Studies in both Basic, Applied, and Technical educational fields. There are as many as total 04 Undergraduate; 22 Postgraduate and 20 Ph.D. Programmes of Study running under total 07 Schools and 20 Teaching Departments. This is one of the salient characteristics of the University which has attracted the enthusiastic learners from different parts of the country to seek admission here. Needless to reiterate, the well-experienced and competent Faculty of the University is the central basis for the academic excellence being sustained herein.
The location of the University in Motihari, Bihar does take us to the glorious historic year of 1917 when Mahatma Gandhi started his well-known SATYAGRAHA, the first ever anti-colonial struggle against the British. It is rightly said that Motihari made Mahatma Gandhi the BAPU, the premier MASS LEADER who henceforward revolutionized the whole India through miraculous mantras of Truth and Non-Violence. No wonder, MGCU is committed towards inculcating the spirit of SATYAGRAHA, TRUTH and NON-VIOLENCE among our learners towards rendering their invaluable services to the humanity.
Christened after Mahatma Gandhi, FATHER OF NATION, MGCU is one of the emerging public Central Universities of India. The Motto of the University is enshrined in the LOGO: . The very logo is an invocation of Vedic Chant meant for showering the prosperity of name, fame and riches upon all. This is the guiding principle behind the educational spirit of this University. All the Members of the University (both Teaching & Non- Teaching) work heart and soul towards enabling our students/ learners to achieve the all- round success and prosperity.
It is notable that MGCU is being galvanized under the visionary and dynamic leadership of our Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof Sanjeev Kumar Sharma. It’s remarkable that our VC is a man of prodigious versatility, excellent academic vision and wonderful administrative acumen. ADMISSION/ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
The admission in PhD programme in Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) for Academic Year 2024-25 will be made in terms of the UGC Public Notice No.F.4-1 (UGC-NET Review Committee)/ 2024(NET)/140648, dated March 27, 2024. Accordingly, based on the scores obtained in UGC-NET, the candidates will be eligible in three categories.
Category – 1: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. with JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.
❖ Category – 2: Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. without JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor.
❖ Category – 3: Eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme only and not for the award of JRF or appointment as Assistant Professor.
➢ Those students who are having valid JRF prior to 2024, as per UGC Guidelines, in relevant subject are eligible to apply for Ph.D. Programmes offered by respective Department.
➢ For admission under Category 2 and 3, qualifying in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR and similar National Level Tests – 2024 shall be the eligibility criteria for applying.
➢ Those students who have cleared only NET prior to 2024 are not eligible to apply for any of the Ph.D. programmes.
As per UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.
➢ The candidates applying for admission in Ph.D. Programme must fulfil the eligibility criteria on or before the the last date of applying.
HOW TO APPLY: Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) Ph.D Admission
Online applications are invited from interested & eligible candidates through SAMARTH Portal from 3rd November 2024 (Sunday) to 25th November 2024 (Monday) for admission to the Ph.D. Programmes of Study at Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) in 19 Teaching Departments for the Academic Year 2024-25.
➢ Application procedures: Desirous candidates who fulfils the eligibility criteria as prescribed may apply online through SAMARTH Portal Link https://mgcubadm.samarth.edu.in/ by 25th November 2024 (Monday).
APPLICATION/REGISTRATION FEE
The application fee for admission to various Ph.D. programme of studies for different categories of applicants are as under:
❖ General/OBC/EWS : Rs. 500/-
❖ SC/ST/PwBD : Rs. 200/-
Note:
i. An applicant can apply for payment through net banking/debit/credit card/UPI.
ii. GST and other taxes as applicable by Govt. of India/Bank.
iii. A candidate who desires to apply for more than One Programmes of Studies shall be required to pay
prescribed application fee separately for each Programme/Course.
iv. Applicants are advice to read Payment instructions carefully before paying the application fee.
v. Application fee once paid shall not be refunded in any case. Candidates shall be required to make the payment of application fee through SMARTH portal in online mode while filling up application form.
SELECTION PROCESS: Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) Ph.D Admission
B➢ For admission to all Ph.D. Programmes under all Categories (viz. Category 1, 2 & 3), 70% weightage will be given for valid test scores and 30% weightage for the interview. The Ph.D. admission will be based on the combined merit of valid NET marks and the marks obtained in the Interview.
➢ Interview shall be conducted only of those eligible candidates who have submitted the online application form and shortlisted for interview. The interview will be conducted in the respective Departments of the MGCU.
➢ Department-wise schedule and procedure of interview for admission in Ph.D. Programme shall be notified in due course on University Website (www.mgcub.ac.in).
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
The following are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. programme:
(1) Candidates who have completed:
i. A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a
point scale wherever grading system is followed or
equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
(2) Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
