A frustrated C.J. Stroud took the blame Sunday night after the Houston Texans blew a 16-point lead against the Detroit Lions, saying, “This game is on me.”
The second-year quarterback pointed to himself and the offense for their struggles in the second half, which led to a 26-23 loss to Detroit. Despite the Texans’ defense forcing Lions quarterback Jared Goff into five interceptions — the most in a prime-time game since Drew Brees did it in 2012 — the offense couldn’t hold on to their lead.
The Texans (6-4) became the second team since 1933 to lose a game after picking off five passes and leading by at least 15 points. Before this game, teams were 373-1-1 when they had a 15-point lead and five interceptions. The only other time this happened was in 1970, when the Chicago Bears lost to the Baltimore Colts, despite the Colts’ Johnny Unitas throwing five interceptions.
“Definitely should have won this game,” Stroud said. “My job is to lead the offense to score points, and I didn’t do that today. … We should’ve put them away after the first half. It’s really on the offense.”
The Texans’ second-half struggles have been a recurring issue this season. They’ve been outscored by 59 points after halftime, ranking 31st in the league in that category. Against Detroit, they were shut out in the second half, allowing the Lions to come back.
In the first half, Stroud led the Texans to 23 points, throwing for 164 yards and a touchdown. But in the second half, he only managed 68 yards, completing just 39% of his passes, and threw two interceptions — one of them in the end zone when the Texans were leading 23-13.
“It’s not good enough. Turning the ball over there, especially in the red zone, that’s not winning football,” head coach DeMeco Ryans said. “We talked about starting strong in the second half and being better. But to turn the ball over on the first play of the second half and then again in the red zone, that’s frustrating.”
Ryans said it was tough to lose after the defense did its job by forcing five turnovers, but the offense couldn’t capitalize on those chances. “We didn’t play complementary football,” Ryans said. “I’m proud of the defense for getting those five turnovers, but we stalled too many drives. To beat a good team like Detroit, we need to score points and sustain drives, but we kept going backward.”
Before this week, the Texans had been averaging just 9.1 points in the second half, and they haven’t scored a second-half touchdown since their Week 6 win over the New England Patriots.
Running back Joe Mixon, who had 46 rushing yards and a touchdown in this game, said the loss “stings” but added that the team would stay focused. “We’re not going anywhere. We know who we are, and we know what we’re capable of,” Mixon said. “We just have to finish.”
As the season moves forward, the frustration with the second-half struggles is growing. Texans offensive players are eager to find a solution.
“We’ve got to be more efficient in the second half. In the first half, we were clicking on all cylinders, but in the second half, we take our foot off the pedal,” said left tackle Laremy Tunsil. “We can’t do that if we want to be a championship team.
This has been a problem all year. We all have to play better, including me.”
