International School for Jain Studies Invites Applications for The 3rd Bhagwan Mahavira Fellowship to Study Prakrit in India 2022-2023.
Objective : To prepare a cadre of serious scholars of Prakrit and Jain Studies who can teach and undertake research in the language of Jain scriptures, known as Prakrit, its literature, and manuscripts. The focus of this project is thus to enable this cadre of serious scholars to conduct such activities in higher education institutions all over the world.
Background : This program will allow access to the original sources for learning about Jain faith and practice. Hermann Jacobi, A. N. Upadhye, Padmanabh S. Jaini and others all learned Prakrit in order to read and translate primary texts. This program has been conducted annually since 2019 with support of Mahavira Vision, the Jain Academic Foundation of North America, and other donors. So far six (06) participants from UK, USA and India have studied Prakrit under this program. It is recognized by Gujarat University which awards a post-graduate diploma upon completion.

Duration and Dates : The program will begin in September, 2022. The period of study extends through May, 2023.
Medium of Instruction : English.
Maximum number of participants: Four (4)
Eligibility : Post-doctoral research fellows/ Doctoral Candidates/Post-graduate students in Philosophy/ History/Indology/ 2021-22 batch at Pune Languages/Linguistics/Religious Studies from North America, Europe, and India, are eligible. Professors on research leave will also be considered.
Preferable : Applicants with knowledge of Jain studies, Hindi, Sanskrit and Prakrit may be given preference. Ability to read and write Devanagari script is desirable.
Fellowship : Adequate monthly stipend will be provided to the selected participants during the entire course to meet the boarding, lodging, study material and local travel expenses in India, related with this program.
Examination & Periodic Tests: Written and oral examination will be held at the completion of the course. Written and oral tests will be held at regular intervals.
Location : Pune (ISJS), Ahmedabad (Gujarat University) and Shantiniketan
Travel Expenses : International travel expenses to and from Pune (India) including medical insurance and visa will be borne by the participants themselves.
Mode of Selection : Academic Qualification and Interview.
Selection Panel : 2019-20 batch at Shantiniketan Selection will be made by a panel of expert academicians.

The following documents are required:
Ø Letter of application (with in five pages) that explains academic qualifications, relevant experiences, and future research plans.
Ø In the letter of application background demonstrating proficiency in Jainism/Buddhism and in languages Hindi/Sanskrit/Prakrit should be clearly evident.
Ø Academic transcripts.
Outline of the Teaching Content :
- Introductory lectures (basics of Prakrit language)
- Prakrit grammar based on Siddha-hema-shabdanushasan by Acharya th Hemachadra (8 Chapter)
- Translation and grammatical analysis of selected texts of different dialects of Prakrit
- Practice of spoken Prakrit and passage writing
- Study of Manuscripts, Epigraphs, convert them to Devanagari and Translate them into English.
