Admission to the Ph.D Programme, 2023

Applications are invited from Indian nationals for admission to the Ph.D programme in the Institute of Language Studies and Research (ILSR), Kolkata in collaboration with the Department of Education, Jadavpur University.

Eligibility criteria and other details related to Ph.D:

Candidates having postgraduate degree, with 55% marks (reservation policy of the West Bengal State Government rule will be followed) in Humanities and Social Sciences can apply. However, candidates having other postgraduate degrees with equal percentage of marks, but opting for interdisciplinary areas of research in Humanities and Social Sciences can apply.

Note: 1. All applicants must have completed results of 2-Year MA or equivalent degree from any university/institute recognized by the UGC.

2. Applicants who have obtained an MA or equivalent degree of less than two (2) years’ duration, must have completed at least a total of five (5) years of under-graduate and post- graduate study in a recognized university/institute.

Process of Application:

Candidates have to pay the application fees Rs. 1000/- (for GEN and OBC A and OBC B candidates), Rs. 500/- (for SC, ST candidates) through the bank account as detailed below:

A single Pdf copy of the entire application along with the payment proof is also to be submitted through email at [email protected] by 20.3.2023 with a subject line caption of “application for PhD programme ILSR-JU 2023”. Both the hard copy of the application by post/by hand as well as the soft copy of the same through email are necessary.

The last date for submission of form is 20.03.2023 (no application will be entertained after this date)

The following documents should be attached with the application form:

i) Two recent passport size photographs.

ii) Attested copies of all mark-sheets and certificates, Madhyamik admit card/certificate for verification of age, SC/ST/ OBC-A/OBC-B certificate, where applicable. NET/SET/GATE certificate, if any.

iii) A candidate who has a two-year M.Phil. degree from any university other than Jadavpur University will be required to submit a certificate from the competent authority stating that the selection to the M.Phil course has been made through a written test and that a full paper on Research Methodology of at least one semester duration was taught in the M.Phil course. Otherwise waiver from RET and/or course-work shall not be granted.

iv) Application payment receipt copy

Candidates will be selected through a written test and an interview.

The candidate who has an M.Phil (Regular two year course) degree and was admitted to the M.Phil programme through a written test, or have qualified NET/SET/GATE shall be entitled to get exemption from written admission test and shall be called directly for an interview if s/he satisfies the following conditions:

Proper documents must be attached with applications for exemptions from written admission test subject to the above conditions.

Preferred Interdisciplinary areas of Research supervision:

Literature and Gender Studies, Literature and Social Stratification, Evolution and Transformative Shifts in Bangla Fiction (post 80s/90s), Women, Subalternity and Empowerment, Ethno-Linguistics and Socio- Linguistics, Geo-Linguistics, Narratology, Language Planning, Stylistics and Discourse Analysis, Deconstruction, Pedagogies of Cultural Discourses, Anthropocene, Post-humanities, Cosmopolitics, Micro-literatures and Minor Voices, etc

As per circular Nos. BC-16014/1/82-SC dt.06/08/1984 & BCD-1, D.O.12017/11/89-SCD(R.CELL) dt.09/01/1990 and letter No.1510-SCW dt.31/05/2007 of the Government of West Bengal, the Scheduled Castes/ the Scheduled Tribes of the states other than West Bengal are not entitled to get the benefit of reserved quota in educational institutions in West Bengal unless they can produce Domicile Certificate as a proof for residing in West Bengal for at least 10 years issued by the competent authority.

A Candidate applying for seat reserved for the OBC-A / OBC-B category (wherever applicable) must produce an OBC certificate (the issues date of which should not be earlier than March 2021) issued by the competent authority that clearly indicates (i) the category (A or B) he/she belongs to:that he/she does not belong to creamy layer of the society. Without submission of such an appropriate certificate, the applicant shall NOT be considered for seats reserved for OBC-A / OBC- B category.

As per the rules of Government of West Bengal, the OBC-A and OBC-B candidates of the states other than West Bengal are not entitled to get the benefit of reserved quota in educational institutions in West Bengal unless they can produce Domicile Certificate as a proof for residing in West Bengal for at least 10 years issued by the competent authority.

An applicant shall not be considered for admission if

i) s/he is already enrolled in a Ph.D. programme in any other university/institute or in any other department of Jadavpur University. Cancellation of such enrolment is mandatory prior to admission.

ii) s/he is pursuing 2-Year M.Phil. in the relevant subjects where the submission of M.Phil dissertations and the viva-voce could not be held before the last date of the submission of PhD application.

• The provisional list of candidates for admission and schedule of the admission test will be notified on the ILSR and Jadavpur University website in due course.

All Applicants must bring in a Statement of Purpose relevant for his/her intended field of research (not more than 500 words) at the time of interview.
