Dear Sir / Madam,, In this glorious moment, it is my great privilege to inform you that the Harichand Guruchand University (HGU) was established by the West Bengal State Government by incorporation of the Harichand Guruchand University Act, 2018, West Bengal Act XXVII of 2018, Part- III, Acts of the West Bengal Legislature and started its journey with the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Kumar Biswas, the Hon’ble First Vice-Chancellor of the University. The Hon’ble First Vice-Chancellor have established the Centre for Matua Studies to explore the culture, heritage, and prospect of Matua Community across the region.

It is also a great pleasure to me to inform you that the Centre for Matua Studies is organising its 2nd Online Seminar on “Women Empowerment in Matua Concept” on July 10, 2021, at 06:00 p.m. through Google Meet (Link: https://meet.google.com/cnr-sdkx-yjm); Youtube Live Link: (https://youtu.be/x7o25Wu3SXA). On this special occasion, we will be graced by the auspicious presence of Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Kumar Biswas, the Hon’ble First Vice-Chancellor of the Harichand Guruchand University as the Patron of the Online Seminar. We will also be enriched by the deliberations from Shri Shri Manoranjan Basu, Loko-Kabi & the Secretary, Bangiyo Loko-Kabi Sansthan and Professor Dr. Kakali Dhara Mandal, Professor, Department of Folklore, University of Kalyani.

About the University

The Harichand Guruchand University (HGU) was established by the West Bengal State Government by incorporation of the Harichand Guruchand University Act, 2018, West Bengal Act XXVII of 2018, Part- III, Acts of the West Bengal Legislature, Law Department Legislative Notification, published in The Kolkata Gazette (Extraordinary), 2nd January, 2019. In the memory of Sri Sri Harichand Thakur and his son Sri Sri Guruchand Thakur and to honour the deliberation of the Matua community to get enlightened through knowledge, Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee on 11thJanuary of 2019 laid the foundation stone of Harichand Guruchand University at Thakurnagar, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. This University has been instituted with a dedicated vision of bridging a pool of opportunities in higher education vis-à-vis envisaging scholastic work in social and cultural issues of Matua community.

About the Centre for Matua Studies

The Centre for Matua Studies, Harichand Guruchand University, is a newly conceived centre to uplift the downtrodden, the Dalits, the untouchables and the backward communities by disseminating the light of knowledge and spreading quality education. The basic objective of this centre of higher learning is to explore the culture, heritage, and prospects especially of Matua Community across the region.

Hence, it is a splendid moment to start our journey through the academic discussion in its 1st

Online Seminar on “Education, Social Reforms and Upliftment of Matuas in Historical Perspective”.
