Ashinaga Undergraduate Scholarships 2022 is now open for applications from suitably qualified students. It is a fully funded scholarship for all students sponsored by Ashinga Africa Initiative.

About the Ashinga Africa Initiative

The Ashinaga Africa Initiative began in 2014. Its mission is to contribute to Sub-Saharan Africa’s expanding role in global development through increasing access to higher education abroad.

We support orphaned students who are committed to returning home and initiating change, by providing access to full financial support to study at a university abroad (equivalent to an undergraduate degree).

Ashinaga support covers tuition, accommodation, travel costs, and other necessary fees.

Aim and Benefits of Ashinaga Undergraduate Scholarships

The Ashinaga (100-Year Vision) Scholarship provides a full scholarship that covers the cost of tuition, accommodation (during the terms and vacation), insurance, flight, and provides monthly stipend which covers food and necessary academic costs.

Follow the instructions to complete the applicant registration form.

Documents to Submit  

  • Registration  
    • Photo or scan of at least one of the following documents; Passport, National ID Card or Birth Certificate 
    • Photo or scan of your most recent Secondary School Term Report/Transcript 
    • Photo or scan of your final Secondary School Examination Results Certificate (if applicable)**  

**For students receiving their examination results in February 2023, we will ask you to send your examination certificate as soon as possible after you have received it.

Requirements for Ashinaga Undergraduate Scholarships 

Applicants must:

1. Have lost one or both parents.

2. Have completed secondary school and received the results of their national secondary school examination (technical and vocational degrees not accepted) within the last two years (any date after 2nd August 2020, including all of 2021 and 2022) or will have completed secondary school and received final exam results before February 28th, 2023.

3. Be born after 1st September 2000.

4. Not have the means to attend university abroad without external financial support.

5. Be proficient in English, French or Portuguese.

6. Be regularly ranked in the top 10% of their class during their last 2 or 3 years of secondary school.

7. Be able to participate in the two Ashinaga preparatory programs, over the course of one year, before attending university.

8. Be committed to return home, or to Sub-Saharan Africa, and contribute to society in Sub-Saharan Africa after graduating from university.

9. Have no dependents who could interfere with academic progress.

10. Have a good enough health condition to be able to study abroad.

Applicants must have citizenship and have completed/are completing high school in one of the following countries:  
 
Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, CAR, Cameroon, Chad, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, DRC, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Kenya, Kingdom of eSwatini, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Seychelles, Sudan, Tanzania, The Gambia, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.  

Selection Process (2022)

Applications for all countries will be assessed after the application deadline, and successful applicants will be invited to a final assessment. During this assessment, Ashinaga conducts individual interviews and sets an examination to better understand students’ academic abilities and career goals in Sub-Saharan Africa. Students must bring all original academic documents and identification documents to the interview. Failure to do so may result in dismissal from the application process.

Q. What are the important dates and deadlines I should remember?

Ans. Applications will be open from the 2nd of August 2021 and the deadline to submit your registration will be on 28th January 2022. You must submit your registration form before you can submit the full application for the programme.

Q. What is the registration form for?

Ans. The registration form allows us to register applicants in our system, and we will use
the information provided to determine if 1) the applicant fulfils all the eligibility requirements and 2) has a strong enough academic record to be considered for the programme. Only applicants who are eligible when assessed according to these criteria will be invited to complete the application.

Q. What does the registration process consist of?

Ans. In the registration you will be asked to submit basic information about you such as your name, nationality, date of birth, email, status of mother and father, year of exam results, overall exam grades, desired field of study, etc. You will also be required to submit an identification document, your exam results, and your final/most recent high school transcripts.

Q. What happens after I submit my registration?

Ans. Within a few weeks  of submitting your registration, you will be notified about whether you are eligible and have strong enough academic grades for the program. If you are invited to complete the full application for the programme, you will receive an email inviting you to proceed to the next round, the full application form.

Q. What does the full application consist of?

Ans. Only applicants eligible for the programme will be invited to fill in the full application. The full application consists of detailed personal, family, academic and post-secondary/university information. You will also be asked about your leadership experiences and any extracurricular activities. The questions will be a mixture of multiple choice, short and long answer, including two essays. You will be required to submit a national ID card or passport, ID photo, birth certificate, death certificate for your parent(s), school transcripts, exam results (if available), letter of recommendation, university transcripts (if applicable), certificates, etc.

Q. Do I have to apply online? What do I do if I am having difficulties with the online application?

Ans. We strongly recommend applying online, however if for any reason you cannot apply online, please email us at [email protected] for support. 

Q. Can I apply after the deadline?

Ans. We do not accept applications after the deadline. We advise you to apply as early as possible with all the documents.

Q. How many students do you select per country?

Ans. Ashinaga takes great care to select and develop our students. We believe in quality over quantity and invest a significant amount of resources in those who are accepted into our programme. As a result of this, to ensure sustainability, we are only able to take about one student per country per year. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to select a student from each country every year.

Q. Why is the age limit 23?

Ans. There are two reasons for this. The first is that Ashinaga wants to prioritize young people for this leadership programme, and the second is that students aged 23 or older typically have greater difficulty in obtaining a student visa to study abroad.

Q. Why is the scholarship only for orphans?

Ans. Ashinaga takes great care to select and develop our students. We believe in quality over quantity and invest a significant amount of resources in those who are accepted into our programme. As a result of this, to ensure sustainability, we are only able to take about one student per country per year. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to select a student from each country every year.

Q. Can exceptions be made to the eligibility criteria?

Ans. Ashinaga is first and foremost an organization that supports the education of orphaned young people.
