NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, an institution of eminence in the field of legal education and research, is a residential University established by the NALSAR University Act, 1998, (Act 34 of 1998) which is committed to innovation in legal education whilst expanding the frontiers of legal research.

The University takes an inter-disciplinary approach towards legal research encouraging students to look closely at the social moorings of law and the relevance of social science methodologies for legal research.

Eligibility for Admission: NALSAR University of Law

  • Candidates who have obtained a Master’s Degree or equivalent qualifications in Law, Management or Humanities or other cognate disciplines from any recognized University or Autonomous Institution securing not less than 55% marks or its equivalent.
  • Candidates who have passed the Company Secretary Examination conducted by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and awarded the Associate Membership of the Institute (ACS) are also eligible for admission to the programme.
  • Candidates who have passed the final examination of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), New Delhi.
  • Candidates who have passed the final examination of Institute of Cost Accountants of India.

Note: In case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes/ Other Backward Classes (Non-creamy layer) / Persons with disabilities / EWS the requirement of marks at Master’s Degree is 50% or its equivalent. The University shall adhere to University Grants Commission’s Guidelines as decided from time to time.

Number of Seats: NALSAR University of Law

The University has 15 vacancies across Law, Social Sciences and Management. The University is especially seeking proposals in new and emerging areas which may have a cross cutting focus in inter and intra disciplinary areas. The area selected should be such that it enables the candidate to make an original contribution to knowledge.

Admissions against the aforesaid vacancies shall only be made if a research proposal is found to be satisfactory and suitable. The University reserves the right not to fill the advertised seats if the Research Board does not find requisite number of research worthy proposals. Similarly, University may admit more candidates if the Research Board finds proposals correlating with the University’s research agenda.

The University encourages, promotes and incubates new and exciting research in emerging and inter-disciplinary areas. In order to assist the area searching process the University conducts online Research Exploratory Workshops where new ideas for Research are discussed. The University adheres to the national-level reservation policy in its admissions.

Procedure for Admission: NALSAR University of Law

  1. Submission of Online Application Form along with registration fee of Rs. 2000/- (Rs. 1000/- of SC & ST) and required documents. The last date of submission is July 7, 2023.
  2. In order to obtain admission, candidates have to appear in a written entrance exam test. This year the three and a half hours exam shall be conducted online on July 15, 2023 from 10:00 a.m.
  3. Applicants who have cleared the UGC-NET/ UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF) in their respective disciplines are exempted from writing the entrance exam.
  4. Entrance test will have two parts. The first, for 50 marks is devoted to assess aptitude for research and writing skills and the second also for 50 marks evaluates disciplinary background and domain knowledge. The first part is mandatory for all applicants irrespective of their disciplinary background. The candidates can do the second part by attempting questions under Law, Social Science and Humanities or Management. The applicable relaxation as per UGC will be taken note of.   5. To be considered for the next leg of the admission process, the candidate must obtain 50% of the marks in the entrance. However, the University can decide upon a higher cut-off depending on the number of applicants and the number of seats available each year.
  6. The applicants who have cleared the entrance test and also those who are exempted from writing the entrance test are required to submit a preliminary research proposal (between 1500-2000 words) with a statement of the research problem and a literature survey which demonstrates that the research topic is unexplored and an original scholarly contribution can be made on the same.
  7. Availability of internal expertise for research supervision would be one of the key factors for consideration during the admission process. Candidates are encouraged to visit the University Faculty profiles.
  8. Applicants may contact faculty members whose area specializations conform with their research interests for consultations on their proposals. Assistance can also be obtained from any Research Exploratory Workshops that the University may conduct in July – August. The scheduling of these workshops will be announced on the University website. The applicants are advised to visit the University website to ensure that they are not submitting proposals on already registered topics.   9. The preliminary research proposals will be scrutinized for plagiarism. If the similarity index for any proposal exceeds 15%, excluding appropriately cited sources, then the applicants will not be called for the interview. Similarly, applicants making proposals on topics already registered with the University may not be called for the interview.
  10. The applicants whose preliminary proposals have passed the plagiarism test and have been found to be researchable areas by the University Research Board only will be invited for an interview. By no means, a candidate whose proposal is rejected due to plagiarism above 16% and / or whose preliminary proposal has been rejected by the University Research Board can claim a slot in the interview.
  11. The applicants who clear the interview will be provisionally admitted to the Ph.D. program.
  12. The Principal Supervisor for each candidate shall be allotted by the Research Committee. In addition, every candidate will have a two-member Advisory Board to aid the research. The Advisory Board shall consist of two experts nominated bythe Supervisor and the Candidate respectively.
  13. The candidates will compulsorily undergo a Foundational Research Methodology course and after successful completion of the Research Methodology coursework, and the additional course work, candidates will be required to defend their modified proposal before the entire Faculty.
  14. The candidates who have cleared the entrance test, but do not clear the interview shall be given one more opportunity to submit their proposal on the basis of the recommendation of the Research Committee without needing to reappear for the entrance exam.
  15. Candidates pursuing the Ph.D. program may assist in the teaching or research activities of the University.

Pattern of the Test Paper : NALSAR University of Law

In the first component the examination will test the research and writing aptitude of the candidates through MCQs, essay, comprehension and précis writing.

In the second component, candidates will also be tested on their ability to write professionally and in accordance with established norms of scholarship through questions which test the candidate’s domain knowledge as also the where, what and how of referencing. The candidate’s domain knowledge will be tested in the field of:
